MEDIA ALERT

DALLAS RUNNERS AND WALKERS TO SUPPORT 12 CHARITY PARTNERS AS PART OF THE FIRST 5X5K FOR GOOD EVENT IN TEXAS:

FIVE START LINES ACROSS DALLAS METROPLEX OVER 24 HOURS

100% of Funds Raised by Event Participants Go Directly to 12 Local and National Non-profits: American Lung Association, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, Histiocytosis Association, Kidsave, Leukemia Texas, LUNGevity, Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA), Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Breast Cancer Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, Parkinson’s Foundation, and Preeclampsia Foundation

Event 360 is launching the 5x5K FOR GOOD Dallas, the first event in its Events FOR GOOD series in Texas. Participants will have 24 hours from 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 14, to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, to complete five 5K courses across the Dallas Metroplex. Participants will choose the order and timing of the five courses, minimizing the number of people at each course at any given time. Each course will have a physical start line and a staff member assisting with a contactless check-in process.

The start and finish lines for each course are as follows:

  • Arlington Entertainment District, Richard Greene Linear Park, Arlington
  • White Rock Alehouse & Brewery, Dallas
  • Katy Trail Ice House, Dallas
  • Gussie Field, Watterworth Park Pavilion, Farmers Branch (this site closed 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.)
  • Ballpark Plaza at Dr. Pepper Ballpark, Frisco (this site closed 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.)

Tim Brockman, President of Event 360, shared, “When the pandemic took full grip on the live entertainment industry, we saw so many great non-profits struggling to fulfill their missions. We also realized that people missed “live events”, be it a concert, sporting event, or a walk/run for their favorite cause. We knew we needed to act. Our team transformed a new event concept into a COVID-compliant event that would not just help people back into the live event space but also provide an avenue for charity partners, at no cost, to re-engage their constituents. The 5X5K FOR GOOD Dallas brings this all together with 12 amazing local and national non-profits under one platform, FOR GOOD.”

“We are pleased to be working with 5x5K for Good to bring fundraising activities to the Dallas area,” said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, Co-Founder, President and CEO, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer. “Funds raised help us continue our work saving, extending, and improving the lives of those vulnerable, at risk, and diagnosed with lung cancer.”

Colleen Fischer, Associate Director of Development at Kidsave, shared, “5x5K FOR GOOD Dallas is a fantastic opportunity for nonprofits like Kidsave to shift up our typical outreach and programming to help older kids in foster care find families. Logistics alone make fitness challenge events difficult to justify when you consider cost and staff time for smaller nonprofits. Offering this to groups to engage and inspire a segment of their donor base really sets up a win-win for everyone involved.”

The full list of charity partners includes:

  • American Lung Association
  • GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer
  • Histiocytosis Association
  • Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA)
  • Leukemia Texas
  • LUNGevity
  • Kidsave
  • Muscular Dystrophy Association
  • National Breast Cancer Foundation
  • National Kidney Foundation
  • Parkinson’s Foundation
  • Preeclampsia Foundation

Registration is now open here. New registrants can save $5 with code NEWS.

How to Run Five 5Ks in 24 Hours

September 24, 2020 by Joann Collins

Our weekends look a little different now: Family gatherings cancelled, festivals cancelled, backyard barbecues cancelled. But guess what? Running is not cancelled! You can take on a live challenge with other people, in a safe way, running five 5Ks in 24 hours. The 5x5K FOR GOOD is making this challenge a reality.

While 25K sounds like a lot, it’s totally manageable (and it’s completely OK if you don’t manage it — you can still wear your race medal proudly, however many 5Ks you finish). And, if you’re not sure five 5K’s in 24 hours is your challenge, don’t worry we have some options for you, too.

A few simple tips to get ready now:

  • Weeks before: Start training. Try completing two 5Ks per week for three weeks.
  • Days before: Get your gear together so everything is easy to grab as you move from course to course: running shoes, socks, face mask, water bottle, snacks, phone & earbuds, light colored/reflective clothing.
  • Night before: Hydrate! And get a good night’s sleep so you wake up refreshed and ready.
  • Morning of: Eat a light breakfast and have snacks and water in your car.
  • Day of: Take a nap between your second and third 5K. You may feel like you’re in a rush, but you have plenty of time. Be kind to your body and it will perform for you.

Here’s a sample schedule of how your day might go:

Friday

6:45 pm Finish up work, feed the dog, grab your water bottle and headlamp and get in the car.

7:30 pm Pick your first course, and arrive  with the RunGo app on your phone and pull up your neck gaiter/mask.

7:35 pm Check in with your personal QR code at the start line and get the text link to the RunGo course

7:36 pm Turn-by-turn directions in your earbuds guide you the through the 5K. Your time puts you at #5 on the RunGo leaderboard!

8:00-ish Scan your QR code to check out.

8:15 pm Should you hit another course tonight? You choose Chinese take-out and a good night’s sleep instead.

Saturday

6:00 am Fuel up with a morning banana, toast and coffee.

6:30 am Get to your next course to get the day started. Wave to your buddy Jake, who just got here and shoot him a text to bet a pancake breakfast on who gets the best time.

7:15 am You win a pancake breakfast! That was delicious. Now you need to go home and lie down…

11:00 am Back at it at your third course of the day. You’re in a rhythm now. Scan your QR code and repeat.

12:00 pm At this point you’ve run almost 10 miles. You deserve a cold beer with lunch, right?

1:30 pm Grab a shower and power nap at home.

3:00 pm Arrive at the fourth course of your choice. Wow this trail around the lake is pretty. You decide to take your time and walk this one to enjoy the view.

5:30 pm At your final start line! Jake’s back with a new bet, and you decide to hit the afterburners and get your best time of the day!

6:30 pm Time to celebrate. Put on your medal and take a selfie to brag on your socials about your kick-ass 24 hours. Jake owes you a pizza.

7:30 pm Put up your feet. Enjoy a slice of pizza or a few, you earned it! Think of all the GOOD you did.

Don’t miss out on a new kind of 5K — contactless, app-guided, and safe. We will map out 5K courses in five locations, and you’ve got 24 hours to hit them all! And we’ll be doing some good along the way — if you register with the option to support one of our charity partners. Tips for Running in the COVID-19 Era

September 4, 2020 by Patrick Riley

In times like these, when we’re spending more time at home than ever before, it’s important to get outside — safely — as much as we can. We are all eager to get back to our usual exercise routines, and with gyms still closed in many states, running outdoors has become the best way to get that endorphin rush that boosts physical and mental health.

Here are some tips to enjoy running safely in the era of COVID-19:

  1. Follow all of the standard COVID mitigation guidelines, including:
    • Don’t run if you feel sick.
    • Wear a mask. There are many breathable options these days, from neck gaiters to masks specifically designed for sports. If you don’t like a mask, then plan accordingly to run in a secluded area or very early in the morning when you won’t encounter other people.
    • Maintain a social distance. As runners we need to regain some credibility with our fellow walkers and general pedestrians. There has been a lot of talk lately about disrespectful runners making others feel uncomfortable. Represent our amazing running community well by being considerate.
    • Run with your social pod and only those in your household.
  2. Take the road less traveled. These days all of the great running paths are packed with the COVID-generated running boom. Find a route that’s not the obvious by the lake or through the park path where you’ll see everyone else. A helpful way to find a new course is to use the Find Route function in RunGo.
  3. Your pre-running checklist before you leave the house looks a little different these days. Shoes — check. Keys — check. Phone/Fitness tracker — check. Hydration — check. Mask — check. Hand sanitizer — check. Don’t forget to bring along a little hand sanitizer for your run. Don’t let the mental space for your run get distracted because you had to touch a surface along the way.
  4. Pace yourself. Yes, actually pace yourself, if you’re new to running. Too much too quickly and you’ll injure yourself or burn out your motivation. On the other hand, if you’re already a runner, don’t beat yourself up if you miss that double-digit run you usually do every Saturday. It’s ok. We’re living a new schedule. As we’re all being flexible in how we manage life in the pandemic our running schedule has to be able to flex as well.
  5. Find a race/run that has adapted to the constraints of COVID. A number of events have begun to pop up that are specifically working to address how to provide a race setting during the pandemic. New York Road Runners is testing an event with rolling start times. Other local run clubs are taking runner temperatures and checking in social running pods. Or participate in a virtual race through Strava. There are many options to help you tap into this amazing running community. Join the 5x5K FOR GOOD event. It’s contactless, app guided, and completely safe. This is no “virtual” run — you’re actually running five 5Ks in 24 hours.

Remember, all of the benefits we get from running, especially the mental benefit. Getting outside beyond our own four walls (are we working from home, or living at work?) to see nature and have a socially distanced view of other people provides perspective. Fitness lowers stress and benefits our immune systems.
